Hong Kong Automotive Platforms and Application Systems (“APAS”) R&D Centre , is going to launch the first “Pilot Project of 5G-enabled Autonomous People Mover Service in a Residential Park”. The Autonomous Platform ( “AP”) will be driven in clockwise direction inside Fairview Park, which resident can enjoy an additional transportation options in the residential area.
The combination of cutting-edge sensors, 5G and AI technologies including high-definition electronic map, target sensors, route navigation and Vehicle Dynamics Control can be found in a conglomerate system design of AP. While the Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (“CV2X”) function will serve as the foundation for vehicles, combined with cameras, Light Detection and Ranging (“LiDAR”) and GPS in order to allow the micro accuracy of global positioning down to 20cm and to effectively minimize the mutual interference of road users and vehicles at Fairview Park. Regarding the AP, it can detect the presence of surrounding vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and obstacles, and will respond instantly and properly to avoid collisions. For the safety of passengers, sensors are embedded in seat belts to automatically detect if passengers had buckled up safely. Low-rise floor design is also adopted to improve accessibility, not only for the elderly and the disabled, but also for the safety of children.
The AP trial will be deployed with the presence of a safety driver and a safety officer. They can immediately take over driving and monitoring roles respectively in case of emergency. All data will be collected during the trial with 5G-enabled network and the AV will be monitored and controlled remotely via control centre when necessary.
